The artists have been busy as Santa's elves fixing up the space, cleaning, sprucing up, and now, hanging their art, all behind the white paper. We will be unveiling the artwork on Wed or Thurs .. keep an eye out. If you are in the area, drive by 240 Bridge Street in Phoenxiville PA. PHX Art Gallery
I will be exhibiting my work with 9 other artists at the PHX Art Gallery on December 8 (opening -5-9pm), 9 (5-9pm), 10 (10am - 9pm) in Phoenixville, PA. This gallery is located at 240 Bridge Street, Phoenixville, PA, and will be open only 3 days, On December 10, our gallery will be in the middle of the Phoenixville Firebird Festival.

LOCAL ARTISTS INCLUDE: Maryanne Buschini, David Knoecklein, Martha Parrish Bush, Jessica Puma, Michael Moore, Tania O'Donnell, Sarah Robb, Veronica Batter, Colleen McCarthy, Kai Pedersen.

These are a few paintings of a bunch I have been working on recently. These were all done during the snowy times, the beach scene especially fun to paint after digging out the path to the studio. The solitary coffee drinker in a local diner contemplating the day, staring at myself in the mirror, or a single white bowl of beans on a white cloth.

This painting is a bit larger (11x14) than I have been working lately. It was fun to work on the values here, and how the lighting in the museum changes the color on the marble. Looking at the warms and cools kept me on my toes. The twist in the figure and the devoted dog were really fun to draw. This is a painting made from a reference photo from Different Strokes.

A couple of recent trips, one to NY, and one to DC, gave me an opportunity to visit some art. At the Met in NY (word of advice: don't visit NYC on St. Patricks Day, unless you wish to be caught up in the overenthusiasm of the green).

I made my way through the parade crowd to see Pierre Bonnard, late interiors. The color use use is amazing, his selection of where to lay it on, and where to leave some canvas peeking through. As you look, the composition comes together, the colors come in waves, and what appears off balance is really so settled. One object on top of another, whether it is plates on a table, or the lovely bottles along the bottom of the self portraits of melancholic Bonnard.

Several weeks later I was able to visit Washington, and see the Hirshhorn for the first time. I have to say it is a strange, monochromatic place. I would love to see some natural light on those deKooning ladies. The Calder mobiles need more space.

I was able to visit the National Museum of the American Indian, its wonderful architecture. Inside I found an exhibit of a contemporary Native American artist, Fritz Scholder. ("Indian, Not Indian") Images and use of color, the exhibit did not discuss his influences in the context of other artists before him, I see some Matisse there, as well as the American imagery.

OWL in the backyard

This afternoon, I looked up to find an owl sitting in the drizzle in our backyard. I have seen a variety of wildlife in the backyard, (deer, foxes, rabbits, etc), but this is our first owl. This photo is a bit blurry, but I did not want to get close and scare it off.

Paint your own images!

What makes an artist need to convert other peoples images into their own? Is it inspiration from the initial image, or a lack of imagination, drive, whatever to transform that image into their own? Good article to consider from the Boston Globe.

Such is the ruckus about Shepard Fairy, the "artist" who recently (around the inauguration) was touting his "iconic" image of Barack. Which takes opening the photo in photoshop and using the posterize filter, then using the paintbucket to 4 colors in specific spots, say 15 minutes, 10 more to add type.

He claims he didn't know where he got the image. I'm sure the AP photographer who made the image has known all along where it came from. Whether you are a street artist or traditional artist, your images should be your own. It is not hip to derive a career from borrowing others work.

Shepard is a brand, and lucky for him that he hitched something he made to a winner. Now we find that it isn't really his image. Hmmm... His conveniently timed show in Boston will probably sell out, and maybe that could be a theme for him ("sell out").

Dr. Sketchy JANUARY

Last Friday night I joined some friends at our local Dr. Sketchy. Our lovely models dressed in leather. Here is one sketch, I enjoyed using a bit of conte along with the charcoal. All there had a fun time!

My artwork is posted on their website, drawn during the Dr. Sketchy session at Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia in December. I really enjoyed drawing from the models, terrific dancers from the "Peek a boo revue."

Nothing to show, but new shelves on the wall in my studio, and proud that I was able to "repurpose" some shelves I already had. Also put up some metal wire shelving over a work space, it is great because the light shines through. This gets furniture off the floor and more space for moving easel, etc, using the whole wall for art making, etc. Right now the floor is full of mess that needs sorting, discarding, and arranging.

Now that I have gotten the studio walls insulated and painted white, it looks much cleaner, (and its warmer in there). Since it is a freestanding shed, warmth is an issue. Next step, a real heater, to replace the combination of space heaters I use on wintry Pennsylvania days. .

Cherry Bomb

Here are drawings made last Friday at Dr. Sketchy's at Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. This is a life drawing session with a little twist. Instead of "artist's models" in classical poses, our models were (Cherry Bomb and Ginger Leigh) neo-Burlesque entertainers/dancers from the Peek a Boo Revue. A little more rowdy, a little more fun than the usual.
